What was your experience with having a colonscopy?

I am going through this procedure in 2 days. I'm a little anxious about it, I've read through all the clinical pamphlets they have given me and done my own research online. However, this is still not much of a comfort, I don't know anybody personally who has gone through this procedure. What was your experience like and can you give me any advice?

What was your experience with having a colonscopy?
I have got to be honest with you. I am a nurse and I have personally had several colonoscopy's without any problems. However, just this past weekend we buried my aunt who had a colonoscopy just last week and the doctor perforated her colon and she bled to death. So, my point is not to scare you but to let you know that there is risk and most people just sign the consent form and think that the risks do not apply to them.

Also, I have found that when a doctor says that that is rare for this kind of thing to happen, I think it is more rare to find a doctor honest enough who admits that it is not rare at all.
Reply:As with all first time experiences, it's normal for you to be a bit anxious about your upcoming colonoscopy. (I was too).

People all over the world have this procedure done with little or no pain at all, and if your doctor is going to give you general anesthesia (put you to sleep) for the procedure you definitely won't feel any pain. If the doctor has decided not to put you to sleep he will be giving you some fairly potent IV drugs to help relax you and ward off any potential pain. Just remember colonoscopy's save many lives each year and we must all be thankful for having it available to us.

I hope you can relax a bit easier knowing someone who's had it done.
Reply:ive heard its not that bad...but its the butt of many jokes
Reply:I am 15 years old and because of a certain disease I have had two colonoscopies. They are NO BIG DEAL. :] Take a breather. I was concerned about my first one too, but the worst part if the prep. The procedure itself is pretty easy. You wont remember much at all, and you wont feel anything either. Just relax, and it'll be fine. Take care!

:]
Reply:There's really very little to be nervous about. I've been through a couple in the last two years - so I've learned that the worst part is the prep you do before the actual procedure.

That's never pleasant, and it can take days to get back to "normal". The procedure is very "pleasant" since you are unconscious- both for your comfort and for the doctor. It's usually done in a special room, and you're given a relaxer prior to the anaesthesia, so there's no discomfort at all. The peace of mind you get when all is well is worth any discomfort that may occur - but which generally does not.

Good luck, and good health!
Reply:They usually put you out for this.
