Is a counselor or psychoanalyst a psychologist?

How do i become a psychoanalyst?


Ive done soem research but im not sure.


on the internet ive read that counseling or clinical maybe both choose to study at a psychoanalytic institute to become psychoanaylst. If someone may verify that this is true, wouldnt that mean that i may become a counselor/psychoanalyst?

Is a counselor or psychoanalyst a psychologist?
A counselor in the US is usually someone who has a master's degree in either counseling or psychology. A psychologist is someone who has a PH. D. in psychology. A psychoanalyst can be a psychologist or someone who follows that that field of psychology in their therapeutic practice. But most of the time here in the US they are psychologist.

Psychologists are not MDs but can be trained in psychoanalysis.


Counselors may or may not be psychotherapists and may or may not be trained in psychoanalysis.


Psychotherapists may or may not be counselors or psychologists who may or may not be trained in psychoanalysis.


Psychoanalysis is a form of therapy and is not so popular nowadays. Within psychoanalysis is Jungian and Freudian and Adlerian and other versions of psychoanalysis. In order to become a psychoanalist one must be psychoanalized and that can take years and cost a lot of money. Plus you must be a mental health professional first.


Most mental health professionals have some psychoanalysis in their training.

Psychoanalytic training is a specialized field of psychology/ psychiatry. It is a certain "take" on why we behave the way we do, and a certain "take" on how to resolve our issues. It builds on the body of knowledge in general psychology.





It requires special training in addition to either a master's or PhD in counseling or social work, plus licensing, or a medical degree with a specialization in psychiatry.
