I understand the need for consent etc, but I have seen first hand (as a research assistant in a cancer hospital) how our clinical trials have been beneficial to science if not only to the patient. If treatment or part of an experiment can be performed in a reasonable amount of time, why can't terminally ill patients be forced to undergo the treatment that may prolong their lives? What is the problem with this? I am in dental school and some day hope to work in research with oral cancer. I'm baffled by these regulations. What's the big deal??

WHAT IS WRONG?
This is the United States of America.
You CANNOT "force" anyone to undergo any kind of treatment, especially experimental studies.
You would be violating the following Amendments to the U.S. Constitution
Amendment 1) Freedom of religion.
Some religions do not permit those types of behaviors

Section 1. Neither slavery nor "involuntary servitude", except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction
Amendment XIV

Reply:Don't you think these people are suffering enough. How would you want to live your last days? As somebody's mandated gunia pig or trying to enjoy the time you have left. Nobody should have the right to tell somebody else to do that.
Reply:because people can be incredibly clingy
like on an episode of scrubs, someone went into an irreversable coma and their heart was need to save someone else, but teh family didnt wnat to lose someione in a vegatative state instead of saving someone else
and because teh government can be ridiculus with medical regulations
edit:im sorry people have such a negative response to your question, i personally never thought of it. people dont realize testing on one terminaly ill patient might save thousands
