M.S.W. Program - Columbia or NYU?

Hi, I got into both the Columbia and the NYU Masters of Social Work programs and am not sure which one to choose.

I have taken one related class at NYU and I know that they focus on clinical and direct client practice. I have done research and I think that Columbia has more oppurtunities for either clinical or policy work. I don't want to commit to only doing clinical work or only doing research. Is either school considered to be better in terms of programs or field placements? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Congratulations, both schools are VERY GOOD. It is true that NYU is narrowly focused on clinical work and Columbia has more options. In fact they have an advanced generalist option which allows you to look at clinical and macro level work at the same time. So this might be a better option. All the NYC schools have a common field training program so that most sites are open to students from any of the schools (there is a level of competition for placements - though there are also Thousands of placements).

Both are going to be good, but Columbia does have the better reputation and since it will allow you to study social work broadly may be a better fit.

Reply:Columbia will have more name cache and that will make some difference - how much is difficult to quantify - but Columbia is more recognized then the other schools. Now the money savings may make up for this. Scholarships or other aid are an issue (Columbia may have more available) Report Abuse
